But that really just has not happened yet.Īnyway, see you in a few days for these skins, I’m sure it will be a wild reveal.įollow me on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. But for now, this collection of IP feels like it’s only half the battle, and you have to do something meaningful with that IP other than just…let all these cartoons shoot each other with guns. That may not be true forever, and perhaps they have larger plans in motion behind the scenes. Here, Fortnite is just reskinning the same default run-and-gun character 2,000 times, and has not really made any significant metaverse moves for what feels like a long time now. Smash Bros, at least, was bringing in these characters and allowing them to still be those characters with their own kits. Goku will be running around shooting assault rifles and handguns at people, but that’s really all he’ll do, other than attend the occasional live concert event or season-shifting finale. Over the past few years, Fortnite has assembled easily the largest collection of disparate IPs in a single game, bringing to life situations where you can be Batman wielding a lightsaber fighting off Master Chief, Kratos and Spider-Man on a rival team.īut this is essentially all it is, and I feel like Fortnite’s metaverse visions have slowly faded to feel less sharp than they were previously. It’s cool and yet it also feels kind of…empty? It’s hard to describe. But Dragon Ball Z, again, feels like the top of the mountain here for collabs in many ways. Call of Duty may have locked out Attack on Titan for itself, but I’ll be amazed if we don’t have Demon Slayer Fortnite skins in a year. We will likely see more and more anime collaborations in the future. On August 17th, 2022, TikToker solidlarson posted a video with a caption reading, "You are among the first to see Goku and Morty Fuse and then get Schwifty," earning roughly 624,700 plays and 115,600 likes in one day (shown below, right). It will sell well, of course, as I’m sure the Naruto collaboration did. The video received roughly 874,200 plays and 145,900 likes in two days (shown below, left). For instance, on August 16th, 2022, TikToker stardestroyer85 posted a video of Goku hitting the Griddy after getting a kill. For instance, on August 16th, 2022, Redditor tomthedum posted a screenshot to /r/ gaming that showed Naruto, Rick Sanchez, Darth Vader and Goku in Fortnite (shown below), captioning it, "how is this a real game." The post received roughly 109,000 upvotes in two days.Īlso, multiple TikTokers uploaded content about the collab in mid-August 2022. On the day of the collab's release, more reactions surfaced across social media. Leading up to the release in mid-August 2022, the memes became more abundant. The entire collab was to last seven weeks. Also, the Kame House from Dragon Ball was set to be included in the update. The collab between Dragon Ball and Fortnite was set to release on August 16th, 2022 and include Goku, Vegeta, Beerus and Bulma with every skin able to transform into "Super Saiyan" form. Later on July 18th, 2022, verified Fortnite news Twitter account ShiinaBR reiterated MidaRado's information in a tweet that received roughly 13,500 likes in one month (shown below). These memes became reality on July 18th, 2022, when information was leaked by Twitter user MidaRado that highlighted code regarding the event. In November 2021 when Naruto was added to Fortnite, speculative discussion and memes surfaced on Twitter about wanting Goku to also be added to the game.
